5 things to do in order to gain control over the Media
- By GenY Team -
The media has become a dominant part of our lives that’s affecting the young minds and shaping the way they behave. For that reason in addition to many others, it should be looked at as a threat especially with the rise of violent movies that aren’t censored. However, some events had me thinking: are we the ones being affected or is it the other way around?
It’s true that media has the power over us in twisting stories and playing on our emotions, just like it’s true that it can change one’s perspective with the right persuasive techniques. But as true as that is, we have power over the media’s content and over those who deliver it and that was proven through the latest Reham Saed’s incident. Here are some ways that can help in gaining control over the media.
- Don’t give any media outlet the attention they don’t deserve
We all know a bunch of TV presenters whom we despise BUT still watch their shows, why? The latest Reham Saed’s incident wasn’t a first and we all knew what kind of presenter she is but watched her anyways. Maybe this was out of curiosity but guess what? This curiosity increases the viewership which brings the show more ads (AKA Money), turn-off whatever that you believe is harming the audience instead of educating them.
- Give your attention to those who deserve it
Let’s take "3abla Kamel" as an example on how we’re the ones affecting the content of media. In her earliest rise, she has done some incredible work, but it wasn’t until she was introduced as this really bleak housewife that she got famous for that role. Same thing goes for "El Lembi" when he got famous after his drunken act in the movie "El Nazer" he then continued his career with the same lousy act that people loved him for.
The point here is that the media looks for what grasps the audience’s attention and introduces it to them, so if our focus became on more beneficial shows and movies, maybe then we’ll have more proper movies to go to...and if people REALLY started boycotting El Sobki’s movies, he’ll then be forced to change the content just like El Nahar channel had no choice but end the show “Sabaya el kheir”.
- Self Education
It’s easy, so easy in fact to manipulate pictures, even videos and play on the emotions of people in order to get them to relate to whatever you want them to. This is why you need to have the knowledge to distinguish between the true and false, what makes sense and what doesn’t, and what’s logical to believe and what’s not. You have a whole world-wide-web to search any topic at an instant. Don’t be fooled and doubt everything.
- The sources
Another way to make sure of the news at hand is to not only get it from a reliable and trustworthy source, but to also get the same news from different sources with diverse agendas, you will be surprised with the amount of contradictions you will find.
- Rise and shine!
We are the future generation, and we should learn from the mistakes that the previous ones had done, we should be able to revive the media by following and believing in the ethics that such profession demands! We should be neutral, hold no agendas; only one that demands delivering the truth and nothing but the truth, we should be able to benefit the people by raising awareness of what would be negatively affecting their lives.
